New Spain Entry Rule: Health Insurance Required

A new rule has been issued by Spain’s Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Health, that requires all travellers to Spain to have full health insurance or face a €6,900 fine and even possibly denial of entry at the border!

It’s important to note that you cannot rely on EHIC or GHIC card either. These cards were never there to replace insurance, they were to be used along side it.
But now, you MUST have comprehensive health insurance cover to be able to enter into Spain. This is not optional.

Travel insurance comes with health insurance, just make sure that it covers you fully as some only have basic levels of cover.
You need to have comprehensive cover with a adequate amount of cover and include things such as medical reparation home (being flown back home), emergency treatment, hospital stays covered, pre-existing conditions covered and reasonable excess fees.

If you arrive with just your EHIC or GHIC card, you can still be fined or denied entry. You must have comprehensive health insurance.

These companies are all good and I have personally used all of them (I have purchased via Cedar Tree a lot).

Important Reminder: Make sure to buy your insurance before you travel and carry proof of insurance, whether that be printed or on your phone. Just make sure you have it to hand to show border officials if asked.
