Tips For Renting A Car Abroad

If you haven’t rented a car abroad before, fear not, I have some great tips for you.

There are also a few car rental companies I recommend using who are all reputable and have some good prices too.
Auto Europe is one of the oldest and best car brokers, and the name is a little misleading as they have rental cars all over the world!
Getrentacar lets you compare prices of cars all over the world.

Some things to consider when renting a car abroad:

  • Plan ahead
Research car rental companies in advance and compare prices and cover included. It’s best to book your car rental before you arrive at your destination, to get better deals. Shop around.
  • Check driving licence requirements
Make sure you have a valid driver’s licence that is accepted in the country you’re visiting. Some countries also require an International Driving Permit (IDP) in addition to your regular licence.
  • Familiarise yourself with local driving laws and road signs
Every country has its own traffic rules and laws. Make sure you read about the local driving laws, road signs, and speed limits to avoid any unhappy surprises on your journey. Remember that laws and signs are very different all over the world. Don’t just assume it is the same as where you live!
  • Consider insurance
Make sure to check the insurance cover provided. It’s important to have enough cover in case of any accidents or damage to the vehicle. Remember that a cheap car might not have enough insurance, so make sure you read the terms as many list the cars with minimal insurance!
  • Inspect the car
Before driving off, thoroughly inspect the car for any pre-existing damage. Take photos of any damage and inform the car company before you depart with the car. This can help save any disputes when you return the vehicle.
  • GPS
If you’re unfamiliar with the area, you might want to consider renting or buying a GPS sat navigation system or you can use a navigation app on your smartphone. I would highly recommend you do this as it makes getting around, a breeze!
